Chris, your "To succeed in the water, you learn to play by its rules." reminded me a little of that Bruce Lee quote about water, of which this is a part:
"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it ... If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup ..."
He might have swiped the concept from Taoism. Not sure if this will make me a better surfer though.

Yes! Sometimes sitting still IS the thing. It can take a while to learn that (at least if you're me).
